The certification is valid on an annual basis, i.e. every year the equipment has to be reassessed.

In the absence of national and/or European regulations (Regulation (EU) 1321/2014) regarding repetitive maintenance instructions relating to compass compensation, it is the manufacturers who would mark these instructions and if they exist, they would be incorporated into the maintenance programmes.

Provided that you meet the requirements for this, you have the possibility to undergo the procedure for acceptance of class or type ratings endorsed on licences from an ICAO third country. The following options are currently available:

  1. Annotation with restriction to ICAO Third Country registration.
  2. request prior authorisation from EASA for the endorsement of the rating without restriction to registration
  3. apply for both procedures

According to Article 9 a) of Order TMA/285/2020 of 25 March, adopting extraordinary flexibility measures in the fields of civil aviation not covered by European Union regulations in relation to the situation created by the global COVID-19 coronavirus crisis: Initial and recurrent courses that lose their validity in the period between the beginning of the state of alert and one month after its end shall automatically extend their validity until three months after the lifting of the state of alert.

According to Article 9 b) of Order TMA/285/2020, of 25 March, the necessary alternative measures must be adopted to ensure that the personnel concerned maintain the aptitude, knowledge and are up to date with the changes that have occurred in the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air ICAO Doc9284/AN905, and that affect the performance of their duties.

If your Operator qualifies for such an exemption by complying with the requirements and procedure established by the EASA Operations Service, the processing of its extension of validity shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned EASA Resolution of date with regard to type or class ratings without the need for prior application to the Aeronautical Personnel Licensing Division.

According to EASA Resolution dated 05.05.2020, in the case of recent experience referred to in FCL.060 b) and c), the validity may be extended or compliance with the requirements set out in that paragraph may be alleviated, provided that this is done in accordance with an exemption issued by the air operator's Authority. In the case of Spanish aircraft operators engaged in commercial air transport or non-commercial operations with complex motor-powered aircraft, a proposal for exemption shall be submitted to the Aircraft Safety Directorate.

  • According to EASA Resolution dated 18.03.2020 the rating shall be in force between 14.04.2020 and 31.07.2020.
  • According to EASA Resolution dated 05.05.2020 the rating must be in force between 14.04.2020 and 31.07.2020. The breafing with the instructor shall be performed prior to the extension and endorsement by a valid examiner.

In cases where the extension of validity procedure is not carried out under the above conditions, the rating will be deemed to have lapsed.
