Planner Pilot License (SPL)

    1. What is a glider?

    It is an aircraft heavier than air sustained in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its fixed bearing surfaces and whose free flight does not depend on an engine.

    2. How can I be a glider pilot?

    In order to be able to act as a sailplane pilot, it is necessary to obtain the sailplane pilot licence (SPL) provided for in Annex III (Part-SFCL) to Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1976 of 14 December.

    In order to obtain a glider pilot licence, the applicant must be at least 16 years old and take a theoretical-practical course at an approved training organisation (ATO) or in a declared training organisation (DTO).

    Notwithstanding the above, training as a pilot can be started at an age below the age of 16, and pilots in training must have at least 14 years of age in order to be able to fly alone.

    In addition, certain psychophysical conditions must be met which are attested by obtaining an aeronautical medical certificate class LAPL or a class 2 medical certificate when commercial operations are carried out.

    After taking the course at an ATO or DTO the applicant(s) must pass a theoretical test test conducted by AESA as well as a practical examination consisting of a flight test with a flight examiner.

    3. What are the privileges of the holder of a glider pilot licence (SPL)?

    In accordance with requirement SFCL.115, the holder of an SPL has privileges to exercise as pilot-in-command on sailplanes:

      • has completed 75 hours of flight or 200 launches or take-offs and landings as PIC on sailplanes.

    Notwithstanding the above, the holder of an SPL with privileges as an instructor or examiner may receive remuneration in exchange for:

    • provide flight instruction for obtaining an SPL;
    • conduct skill tests and verification of proficiency to obtain an SPL;
    • provide training and carry out tests and verification for privileges, ratings or certificates associated with an SPL.

    4. Request to issue or modify the Planner Pilot License

    Both to apply for your license, after passing the theoretical and practical examinations, and to update the content of it, you must complete and submit the application format, and the documentation indicated therein, in accordance with Article 16 of Law 39/2015 of 1 October 2015 on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations, namely:

    5. Certificates of instructor (FI(S)) and flight examiner (FE(S)) on glider

    Annex III (Part-SFCL) to Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1976 of 14 December 1976 sets out the requirements for the licensing of sailplane flight crews and sets out the requirements for obtaining flight instructor certificates (SFCL.300) which allows for the provision of flight glider and flight examiner flight training on glider and glider flight examiner for skill testing, proficiency checks and proficiency assessments (SFCL.400).
