Frequently asked questions

An application shall be submitted to EASA stating that the person concerned has passed a flight test before an authorised examiner.

From 1 April 2026 (included), when an FI rating is revalidated or renewed, it will become valid for 3 years (instead of 2 years as before). The requirements to revalidate or renew remain.

Therefore, if an application for revalidation or renewal is submitted until 31 March 2026 (inclusive), the FI rating will be noted on the national ULM licence, with a validity date of 2 years.

On the other hand, if the application is submitted from 1 April 2026 onwards, the validity of the annotated FI rating would be 3 years.

The following shall be required:

  • be able to exercise the privileges of an LAPL, PPL, CPL or ATPL licence, as applicable, in accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) No º 1178/2011 of 3 November 2011;
  • Have a valid rating to fly an equivalent category and class of aircraft, and be able to exercise those privileges;
  • A qualified ultralight instructor shall have verified that the pilot has adequate knowledge of the applicable regulations and a level of practical expertise, performing a minimum of 1 flight training flight with the instructor of a duration of at least 1 hour, in which the operational and emergency procedures corresponding to the type of ULM aircraft to be flown shall be practiced. This flight shall be recorded in the pilot's ULM flight time record and signed by the instructor responsible for the flight, who shall be clearly identified in the record; and
  • Have a separate flight time record for ULM flights, where flights made on this type of aircraft will be recorded.

Helicopters equivalent to a ULM (with this rating) are those with single piston engine and a maximum certified take-off mass of 2,000 kg or less, carrying a maximum number of 3 passengers, so that there are never more than 4 people on board.

In this regard, some common examples can be cited (not an exhaustive list) that comply with the above, such as Robinson (R-22 and R-44 ratings), Hughes (HU 269 rating) or Cabri (Cabri G2 rating).

They shall be recorded only and exclusively in an independent pilot's flight logbook (and shall not be reflected simultaneously in more flight logbooks).

A different flight log shall be completed for each of the ultra-light aircraft variants. At the beginning, on the first page, the name and surname of the holder shall be entered, as well as the licence number and the aircraft variant to which that flight log belongs.

In accordance with the provisions of Article 8.4 of Royal Decree 123/2015, the holder of the ultralight pilot's licence must keep and keep up-to-date a flight time record, in accordance with the model published by the EASA on its website.

A different Pilot's Flight Log shall be completed for each of the ultra-light aircraft variants (different books for MAF, AG, DCG, H and HD). At the start of a Pilot's Flight Log, on the first page, the name and surname of its holder, as well as the licence number and aircraft variant to which that flight log belongs, shall be noted.
