Frequently asked questions

As provided in regulatory points M.A.403(b) and ML.A.403(b)(2), as applicable, the pilot may defer a defect in accordance with the MEL as long as it does not require the performance of a maintenance procedure (M), as it is not considered maintenance, and no commissioning or CRS is required.

For the rectification of an already issued CRS, the following points must be taken into account:

  • It's not a new commissioning.
  • the name of the person correcting the record and the date of correction, which may be another TMA or Technical Office staff, as established by the maintenance organisation in its manual.
  • The original record and the name and number/stamp of the certifier that gave the original CRS must be legible.

Relevant training serves to reduce the basic experience requirement to obtain a Part 66 LMA license.

Relevant training shall be considered:

  • Higher-grade vocational training courses in the following specialties:
    • Superior Technician in Aeromechanical Maintenance (for B1).
    • Superior Aviation Maintenance Technician (for B2).

  • Higher grade training courses in maintenance of the following specialties:
    • Aeromechanical turbine engine aircraft (for B1.1).
    • Aeromechanical of piston-engine aircraft (for B1.2).
    • Aeromechanical turbine engine helicopters (for B1.3).
    • Aeromechanical of piston-engine helicopters (for B1.4).
    • Electronic and avionic systems in aircraft (for B2).

  • Training corresponding to a basic training course in a subcategory of B1 other than that requested in an organisation Part 147.

  • For those cases where they have completed ALL hours of theoretical and practical training of a basic course (including internships in real environment) in accordance with the regulations prior to Regulation (EU) 2023/989, and some modules are examined in free examinations under Regulation (EU) 2023/989 in other Part 147 organisations or in the Authority.

However, the consideration of relevant training does not exempt from passing the examinations corresponding to the basic training modules of Part 66 of the category or subcategory of the licence that is intended to be obtained.

Operational aircraft experience means the following:

  • That obtained in the performance of maintenance tasks on aircraft being operated by aircraft operators, air taxi organisations, owners, etc.
  • The experience should comprise a broad spectrum of tasks in complexity, quantity and variety and have to be performed in a Part-145 or Part-CAO environment.
  • For L licences, it is acceptable for maintenance experience to be gained only during weekends and public holidays, provided that the level corresponding to the category/subcategory being sought is attained.

The formats to be used to document the experience records are available on the website:

With the aim of supporting applicants in their training and in obtaining the L-category Aircraft Maintenance Technician (TMA) licenses, AESA puts at your disposal a selection of guiding questions corresponding to the different theoretical modules.

These documents have been developed in collaboration with the Real Aeroclub de España (RACE) and are designed as a reinforcement tool to facilitate the preparation of exams. It is supporting material and is aligned with the contents required in the theoretical examination of the L-category license.
They can be found at: Preparation of exams for obtaining L-category TMA licenses.

AESA has published a bibliography that has been used for the creation of exam questions, and which, therefore, can be used to study. It is located at: Examinations for obtaining an aircraft maintenance licence.
