Madrid, 2 October 2024 (EASA)

The State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) has developed a user guide for Globo commercial operators and pilots who provide their services to commercial operators of these aircraft.

Since 2019, commercial operations of manned hot air, gas or mixed balloons must be carried out according to the requirements of European regulations (Regulation EU 2018/395). With this, one of the responsibilities of the operators indicated in this regulation is the duty to ensure that the pilots of these aircraft are properly qualified, trained and instructed according to the area or type of operation.

Therefore, to facilitate the work of commercial balloon operators, from AESA we have developed this user guide with the aim of sharing the criteria that are applied in the determination of the scope and particularities of the training, as well as the verification that they have to carry out to their pilots, and the determination of the privileges of the holders of a license obtained from its realization.

It should be recalled that the following are excluded from the application of this legislation:

- Balloons designed or modified for research, experimentation or scientific purposes

- Balloons and airships for 1 or 2 occupants with a volume not exceeding 1,200 m3, in the case of hot air (HAB) and 400 m3 in the case of other lifting gases (GB)

- Airships (AS) other than hot airships (HAS)
