What can't I transport as carry-on baggage?

The European Union has adopted new security measures that extend the amount of liquids, gels, creams, or substances of similar consistency, which passengers can carry with them in their carry-on baggage and when they pass security checks at Community airports

These measures apply to all passengers departing from airports in the European Union, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, regardless of their destination.

Items allowed in the transparent bag

    • Passengers may carry in their carry-on baggage:
      • Liquids in containers of 100 ml or less. (In a transparent plastic bag, with a maximum capacity of one liter, and with airtight closure, self-closing).
      • Liquid products purchased from airport stores or aircraft.
      • Medicines, baby food and special dietary products, which exceed 100 ml.
    • How do you have to carry fluids in your carry-on luggage?

It is mandatory to present liquids separated from the rest of the carry-on baggage to pass security checks, as security personnel may require the liquids to be opened for inspection and exceptionally, and only for security reasons, can they be rejected.

Liquids carried in carry-on baggage must be presented at security checks as follows:

    • Packages of less than 100 ml: They will be carried as before in a transparent plastic bag, with a maximum capacity of one litre, and with airtight closure.
    • Liquids purchased in airport shops or aircraft: They will be sealed at the time of purchase in a safety bag with the receipt of purchase inside, the passenger must not open it until their final destination. If you have a connecting flight at another airport, security checkers may need to open this bag to inspect the liquids. Note that it is a connecting flight so that, if necessary, the liquids are resealed.
    • Medicines, baby food or dietary products: They will be taken out of the luggage and passed through the liquid control.
    • Liquids are considered to be:
      • Water and other drinks, soups, syrup.
      • Creams, lotions and oils, including toothpaste.
      • Perfumes.
      • Gel, such as shower gel or shampoo.
      • Contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants.
      • Aerosols.
      • Any other of similar consistency.

However, the new measures do not limit the purchase of these liquids or substances in stores located beyond the checkpoint where you show your boarding pass or on board aircraft operated by a European Union airline.

If these products are sold in sealed bags, do not open them until your trip is finished. If you are going to continue your journey at another airport in the European Union, do not open this sealed bag until you have left the last EU airport.
